The Air Pruning Tray
Erin, Floret Farm

"Winstrip trays provide all the benefits of soil blocking with the convenience and efficiency of a regular seed-starting tray. Unlike standard trays that fall apart after a few seasons of use, these sturdy, well-made Winstrips will easily last more than a decade. We start the vast majority of the cut flower and seed crops we grow on the farm in 72 deep trays and are really excited that Neversink has started manufacturing this size."

Why Use Deep Cells?

  • Superior Root Development — They allow plants with long taproots, such as sweet peas, to grow freely without becoming root-bound.
  • Reduced Transplant Shock — Larger, healthier root systems establish more quickly once planted in the garden.
  • Early Starting — You can start seeds earlier in the season. The extra space in each cell means you can avoid repotting before it's time to transplant outside.

Flowers

Deep cells are excellent for all cut flower varieties, especially those with long taproots like sweet peas or those that resent transplanting like poppies. Utilizing deep cells prevents root-binding and reduces transplant shock, giving plants the best possible start.

Recommended Flowers for Floret Winstrip 72 Deep Cells

All annual, biennial, and perennial cut flowers
Ranunculus and anemone corms
Chrysanthemum and dahlia cuttings

Vegetables

Deep cells are great for vegetables that develop long taproots or those that are sensitive to root disturbance. Using these deeper trays allows for more root expansion.

Recommended Vegetables for Floret Winstrip 72 Deep Cells

Root Vegetables like Beets: These can be started in cells if transplanted gently before they get too large.

Large-Seeded or Sensitive Crops like Cucurbits: Cucumbers, melons, pumpkins, and squash have sensitive root systems and grow very quickly.

Corn: has a deep rooting potential and is often better started in deeper cells to accommodate its rapid initial growth.

Long-Season Fruiting Vegetables: Tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants are deep-rooted and benefit from being repotted into deeper containers to encourage additional rooting along the stem.

Deep-Rooted Greens: Celery and spinach thrive in deeper cells for better root development.

Air Pruning

Roots obviously grow downward. Every nursery tray has only a round drainage hole at the bottom of the cell. Roots hit the bottom of the tray and circle around and around that hole.

The Winstrip Trays' unique bottom design combined with AIRSTRIP technology stops roots from circling, even if the plant is overgrown. It's all about that Winstrip shape at the bottom of the cell. It holds in soil and air prunes.

Air Pruning

The Large Winstrip Shape that extend across the bottom of the cell not only make it easy to remove starts but air prune the roots preventing root circling. Thus Transplants can be left longer in the tray if needed. Transplants are also healthier and grow quickly when transplanted.

Lifetime Use

Each tray weighs in at over 1.7 pounds. They stack and nest for easy storage. They are made with thick UV resistant plastic of the highest quality to last for many, many years. I have had mine for 20 years and they still work great.

Open Cell

Winstrips open cell design allows more air which creates a healthier environment. Each cell has vertical air spaces and Airstrips where air can flow around each cell. More importantly these slits extend all the way to the bottom corners of the cell. This creates healthy starts with much less disease.

Bottom Trays?

Bottom trays are a great addition to water Winstrips from below. Our indestructible trays are the best made.

Unlike regular flimsy vacuum formed nursery trays, Winstrips do not require a bottom tray for handling. Winstrips can be moved around easily with one hand.

For farm scale use in Greenhouses, Winstrip Trays can be used directly on vented tables to get the best air circulation.
