A Vertigo™ Drop Seeder needs both a Bottom Plate and a Top Plate.

HOW THE TOP PLATE WORKS

The Top Plate captures and meters the seed. When the Vertigo is actuated, the Top Plate moves so its seed-sized holes align with the larger holes in the Bottom Plate, dropping seed into each tray cell.

Each Top Plate must match both the tray layout and the seed size. One tray layout may therefore require multiple Top Plates for different seed sizes. In contrast, only one Bottom Plate is needed for each tray layout.

Use the seed-size table on this page to select the recommended Top Plate for your seed and tray.

Each Vertigo™ Top Plate is purpose-designed for the Vertigo™ Seeder and made in Cookeville, Tennessee. The plates are annealed in our shop to remain flat and resist breakage, then laser-cut to your specifications.

Seed-hole sizes have a tolerance of ±0.15 mm.

Custom plates can be made for any tray whose cell layout fits within the maximum seeding area of 558 mm × 241 mm.

If your tray is not Paperpot, Winstrip®, or a standard 1020 tray, choose "Custom," then email us for instructions after your purchase.

Seed Plates

Each plate is designed specifically for the Vertigo™ and built as a professional piece of equipment.

  • They are perfectly flat
  • They have consistent thickness
  • They have a seed-holding area to help prevent seed roll during the drop
  • The handle is incorporated into the plate
  • Switching plates could not be quicker

Vertigo plates are purpose-built for consistent flatness, thickness, and repeatable operation rather than cut from generic acrylic sheet.

Singulate Seeds

The Vertigo allows you to ramp up production and quickly seed tray after tray.

Vertigo™ Top Plate Sizes

It is always best to measure your seeds because sizes can vary widely among suppliers and batches.

To singulate seed, loosely match the seed hole to the size of a single seed. The hole should fit only one seed with a little wiggle room.

Seed-hole size has two dimensions: 1) plate thickness (height) and 2) seed-hole diameter.

For multiple seeds, you can calculate the volume of the seed hole using this formula: volume = πr²h.

Instructions

The chart above is intended only as a general guide. It is always best to measure your seeds because sizes and shapes can vary widely among varieties, suppliers, and batches. As a general rule, rounder and larger seeds are easier to singulate. When possible, use pelleted seed.

Extremely small seeds are difficult to singulate. Seed-hole sizes have a tolerance of ±0.15 mm.

Vertigo Frequently Asked Questions

You need the Vertigo Drop Seeder Frame, one Bottom Plate that matches your tray layout, and one Top Plate that matches both your tray layout and seed size. The frame includes its hardware and a Top Plate Guide.

You need one Bottom Plate for each tray layout. The Bottom Plate is a static pass-through plate with a larger hole positioned over each tray cell, so it does not change when you switch between different seed sizes in the same tray layout.

The Top Plate meters the seed, so it must match both the tray layout and the seed size. If you seed different crops with different seed sizes into the same tray layout, you may need multiple Top Plates while continuing to use the same Bottom Plate.

Use the seed-size table on this page to select the recommended Top Plate for your seed and tray. Seed size can vary by variety, supplier, and batch, so compare the recommendation with your actual seed when needed.

The Vertigo Frame and plates can be used with any tray whose cell layout fits within the maximum seeding area of 558 mm × 241 mm (22 in × 9.5 in). This includes compatible Winstrip®, Paperpot, standard 1020, and other propagation trays.

Yes. Custom plates can be made for tray layouts that fit within the Vertigo maximum seeding area of 558 mm × 241 mm. If your tray is not Paperpot, Winstrip®, or a standard 1020 tray, choose the Custom option and follow the instructions provided after purchase.

The Vertigo is designed for quick plate changes without screws or springs to adjust. Slide the current plate out and the new matching plate in.

The Top Plate captures seed in seed-sized holes. When the Vertigo is actuated, the Top Plate moves until those holes align with the larger pass-through holes in the Bottom Plate, allowing the seed to drop into the tray cells.

No. The Vertigo Drop Seeder Stand and Seed Capture Tray are optional accessories. The required parts for seeding are the Frame plus the correct Bottom Plate and Top Plate.

Yes. Both plates must match the same tray layout, and the Top Plate must also match the seed size. Using a mismatched tray layout will not correctly align the seed drops with the tray cells.
