Vertigo™ Top Plate Sizes

It is always best to measure your seeds as sizes can vary widely from different suppliers and batches.

To singulate seed, you want to match the seed hole to loosely the size of a single seed. You want the hole to only fit one seed with a little wiggle room.

The seed hole size has two dimensions 1) the plate thickness or height and 2) the seed hole diamter.

For multiple seeds, you can figure out volume of the seed hole using this formula - volume = π r² h

Took the gamble and went all in on the seed dropper.

We have used other seed droppers before that would not do smaller seeds like onions without having to take the plate out, remove the seeds that got trapped between the plates, make sure to cleaning out every spec of anything, get the tension between the plates right, and repeating this process every 3 or so flats; drilling additional holes for more screws to prevent the top and bottom plates from allowing smaller seeds between them making a mess of seeding flats and in turn making the process of switching to different plate sizes more lengthy and more training. Ultimately this made seeding by hand more efficient.

To step up our seeding process this season we were planning to purchase a vacuum seeder mainly due what I have seen on other farms. My past experience with seed droppers the small seeds were challenging and in the end better to seed by hand. We found the neversink seed dropper by chance and mulled over the pros and cons of the vacuum seed vs this model of a seed dropper. Noise/quiet, portability, storage, minutes to seed a flat, user-friendliness, how each seeder would fit in our system, etc. The biggest unknown for us was, you guessed it, would the seed dropper be able to do smaller seeds? Well We have started seeding for this season, and I am really happy to inform you that we have not had any seeds get stuck between the plates. The smallest seed we have done so far is onions and I was really happy about the seeding. I was skeptical about there not being anywhere to adjust tension between the plates, but the way its designed does not require it which makes training waaaaaaay easier.

So here are some very minor things that we noticed about using the seed dropper but by no means are deal breakers for us. The seeder is a little heavier than the other one (5.5# vs 8.5#) but I would trade the small difference in weight over the ease of use and durability any day. The seeder is brand new so I can't say what the actual durability, but the frame is pretty durable. the frame would probably survive some drops but it is aluminum and would probably bend with enough abuse so just treat it nicely and it think it will last a long time. I don't know if the plates should be stored flat on a shelf or vertical like records to prevent any future warping. We are storing them flat at room temp out of the sun just to prevent any warping. The plate IDs take a little getting used to but are clear enough. We colored in the plate IDs with paint pens so they're a little easier to read.

Overall it great. Glad we got it. Seeding has been improved from last year which was the goal of this purchase. Thanks for making the tool available.

Easy to do 30 trays quickly!

Silent! Simple and clean. We were able to seed out about 30 trays in record time! We were doing trays so fast we had to create a system for where to place all the finished trays. We switched between the 128 and 72 plates quickly. No loud vacuuming noise.
