A washing machine being used to process salad greens has major issues.
- Less than hygienic for what most customers feel is a ready to eat product. Washing machines are very hard to clean, are not all stainless, usually grow biofilm inside them and would never be allowed by the health department for ready to eat food.
- Will damage greens. Clothes washing machines are intended to force water out of saturated clothing. To do this they spin at 1200 rpms or more which creates G forces of over 350 at the edge of the basket. That force is intended to wring, press, and squeeze the water from the clothing. Greens should never be pressed or squeezed. That will create microscopic creases on delicate greens which will cause early rot.
- Testing. We carefully tested our spinner with the goal of having the longest shelf life and avoid the major issues of a washing machine. We used moisture meters, rpm testers, force calculations, and detailed logs of shelf life. We found that there must be some moisture left to ensure a long shelf life. Over dried greens become desiccated which drastically reduces quality. We ended up at about 21 psi for our machine as the perfect combination of shelf life and producing a product without damage.
- Our Greens Spinner will not Damage Greens. Washing Machines use high rpms that press the greens against the basket with loads of force which may remove water in hurry but also causes significant damage to your product. Our greens spinner is designed to shed water off the greens (not squeeze it out of greens) and thus spins slower with less force. To process greens correctly and without damage, it does take a couple more minutes at a lower rpm with a shake in between. Our greens Spinner will dry delicate greens within a safe, sanitary, commercial appliance resulting in a better product with the longest shelf life.
